Research

According to the surveys and interviews with individuals about their experience on campus, here are some keywords that they used to tell their stories: Stress, Frustration, Panic, Annoyance, Lost, Unsafety, Burden, Embarrassment, Disappointment, Misunderstanding, Overwhelming, Exhaustion, Anger, and Uselessness.

Problem

Many students and staff have difficulty navigating the San José State University area due to unidentified buildings, unclear kiosk map and signage. A great amount of students lost a sense of pride for SJSU because their lack of opportunities to build a community for themselves or to familiarize themselves with school's intriguing history.

Solution

We create a sense of community within San José State by designing an unique wayfinding system and dividing school into small districts with their own distinct architectural and historical feel. The highlight is each district has a unique motif and color derived from the aesthetics of the buildings in the district and the majors that occupy the space. The motifs are then used in kiosks and developed into a set of community seatings for both students and visitors.

Each motif has the same core in the middle to unify the design and to suggest strength, and the two defining pieces that surround it represent the community
